Pien Smits van Oyen is an experienced ceramic artist, born in the Netherlands, now living in Gothenburg, Sweden.

With Pien Ceramics, she hopes to offer a place where people can forget their daily worries for a while, (re)find the connection between body and mind, find peace in a hurried world and where, without pressure, stress or deadlines, people can create. Always with respect for nature.

“I'll never forget the first time my hands came in contact with clay. I was immediately sold. Hours I spent, researching different techniques and styles. I soon joined an open studio in Amsterdam where I spent every hour of every day of every week. When I work with clay, I forget everything for a moment. Completely in trance. Clay feels when you are rushed or stressed, therefore it forces you to slow down. This, for me, is meditation”

Pien is inspired by the the mid-20th century, where she creates through a diverse range of hand-building and throwing techniques. Everything is with respect to traditional materials and methods, but with a modern twist.
